Why routine dental care is the smartest investment in your smile

Most dental problems begin quietly. A small cavity, a little gum inflammation, or a worn filling rarely causes pain in its early stages, which is exactly why so many people only visit a dentist once something already hurts. By then, what could have been a simple, comfortable procedure has often grown into something larger, longer and harder to treat.

General dentistry exists to change that. Through regular examinations and professional cleaning, we catch the small things while they are still small, protect the teeth and gums you already have, and make sure you only ever need the treatment you genuinely need, never more than that.

Whether you live in Jeddah or you are travelling to the city for care, every patient is seen by a dentist trained at world leading institutions and working to international clinical standards. You are treated as a whole person with a whole mouth, not a single tooth in isolation.

What a general dentistry visit at TAM includes

Every visit begins with a thorough clinical examination. We check each tooth, assess the health of your gums, review your bite, and take digital X-rays where needed to see what the eye cannot: early decay between teeth, bone levels, and the condition of any existing fillings or crowns.
Your appointment then includes a professional cleaning, or scale and polish. This removes the plaque and hardened tartar that everyday brushing cannot reach, helps prevent gum disease and bad breath, and leaves your teeth smooth, fresh and noticeably brighter.
If we find early decay or the first signs of gum disease, we treat them gently and conservatively, very often in the same visit. Tooth-coloured composite fillings, fluoride applications and protective sealants restore and safeguard your teeth, and we always show you exactly what we see before any treatment is agreed.

The foundation every other treatment is built on

Healthy teeth and gums are the foundation that everything else depends on. Dental implants integrate more reliably, orthodontic treatment moves teeth more predictably, and cosmetic work such as veneers or whitening looks better and lasts longer when the mouth beneath it is healthy.
That is why general dentistry is the natural starting point of any treatment journey at TAM. A simple healthy-mouth assessment tells us (and you) what is sound, what needs attention now, and what can safely wait, so that any larger plan is built on solid ground rather than guesswork.
It also means fewer surprises and far less treatment over a lifetime. Preventive dentistry is consistently the most effective dentistry there is: the problems you prevent are always gentler and simpler than the ones you have to repair.

The terms, explained

TermWhat it means
Plaque A soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth every day. Left undisturbed, it is the root cause of both decay and gum disease, which is why brushing and regular cleaning matter so much.
Tartar (calculus)Plaque that has hardened onto the tooth and below the gumline. It can no longer be brushed away and must be removed by a professional scaling.
Cavity (dental caries)Decay caused by acid that bacteria produce from sugar. Caught early it is treated with a small, tooth-coloured composite filling; left longer it can reach the nerve.
GingivitisEarly, fully reversible gum inflammation. Gums that bleed when you brush are usually the first (and most ignored) warning sign.
PeriodontitisAdvanced gum disease that affects the bone supporting the teeth. It is manageable, but the damage it causes cannot be undone, so early treatment is key.
Scaling & polishingThe professional cleaning that removes tartar and surface staining and leaves the teeth smooth, making it harder for plaque to return.
FluorideA mineral treatment that strengthens enamel and helps reverse the very earliest stages of decay before a filling is ever needed.
Fissure sealantA thin protective coating placed in the grooves of the back teeth to seal out the bacteria that cause decay.

A plain-language guide to the words you’ll hear during a general dentistry visit, so nothing about your care is a mystery.

What to expect, step by step

We begin by checking every tooth, the health of your gums and the way your bite comes together, supported by digital X-rays where they are needed. We look for early decay between the teeth, the condition of any existing fillings or crowns, the first signs of gum disease, and anything affecting your bite or jaw. Then we walk you through exactly what we have found (in plain language, with the images on screen) so that every decision about your care is made together and nothing happens without your understanding.

Next, your teeth are professionally cleaned. A scale removes the hardened tartar that builds up along and below the gumline, the main driver of gum disease, and a polish lifts the surface staining left by tea, coffee and time. Your teeth are left smooth, fresh and noticeably brighter, and we finish by showing you the brushing and flossing techniques that will work best for your particular mouth.

If the examination reveals early decay or the first signs of gum disease, we treat it gently and conservatively, very often in the same visit, so you don’t need a second trip. Tooth-coloured composite fillings repair cavities invisibly, fluoride strengthens weak spots before they ever become cavities, and protective sealants guard the grooves of the back teeth. Anything more involved is planned with you first, with a clear written plan and a fixed price before it begins.

Good dentistry doesn’t end when you leave the chair. You go home with a personalized prevention plan (the right tools, techniques and habits for your mouth) and a recall schedule tailored to your risk, usually every six months. For international patients, we stay reachable for advice after you return home, so your care continues wherever you are.

Frequently asked questions

  • How often should I have a dental check-up and cleaning?

For most adults, every six months. After your first visit we set a personalised recall schedule based on the health of your gums, your history of decay and your individual risk; some patients need to be seen more often, others less. Regular visits are what keep small, easily treated problems from becoming large, expensive ones.

  • Is a professional cleaning painful?

No. A routine scale and polish is comfortable for almost everyone. Most patients describe it as a mild scratching or tickling sensation and leave feeling fresher. If your gums are inflamed or sensitive, we can numb the area and work more gently. The healthier your gums become, the more comfortable cleaning is over time.

  • Do I need a consultation before I travel to Jeddah?

Yes, and it’s free. A short virtual consultation lets us review your X-rays or photos, confirm whether a root canal is the right treatment, and send you a clear plan and a fixed, all-inclusive price in writing before you book a flight.

  • I’m visiting Jeddah for Hajj or Umrah. Can I fit in a check-up?

Absolutely. Many pilgrims use their time in Jeddah to take care of dental health they’ve been putting off. A check-up and cleaning can usually be completed in a single appointment, and we schedule around your pilgrimage, never against it.

  • Are your dentists licensed, and can I verify their credentials?

Every dentist at TAM is licensed and verifiable through the Saudi Ministry of Health, and our doctors hold degrees from named institutions in the United States, Canada and the UK. These are real, checkable credentials. We’re happy to share them during your consultation.

  • How do you handle hygiene and sterilisation?

The clinic is fully accredited by the Saudi Ministry of Health and follows international infection-control standards. Every instrument is processed through validated sterilisation cycles, and treatment rooms are single-patient by default: no shared spaces, no shortcuts.

  • What happens if my check-up shows I need further treatment?

You receive a clear, written plan first, with a fixed price, so there are no surprises. Nothing proceeds until you’ve understood and approved it. Many issues caught early (a small filling or a fluoride treatment) can be completed in the same visit; anything larger is planned around your time.

  • Is English spoken at the clinic, and do I need a visa?

Yes, English is spoken throughout the clinic and across our team. Most nationalities are eligible for a Saudi eVisa, and Jeddah is well connected by direct international flights. Our coordinators can point you to the right visa option for your country.

Treatment: General Dentistry

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Naif Arab. I was his patient since his time at The Fist Clinic, then I continued visiting him at Tam Dental. He is a highly skilled doctor with a deep level of emphaty. I am generally afraid of dental treatments, but Dr. Naif is very careful and explains the procedures very well making appointments free of pain and fear. His work is elegant – I had no problems fitting my clear aligners after the fillings, even for rather difficult cases. Beyond excellent dental work, he also provides a lot of recommendations for cleaning routine. I am very happy I met him during my stay in Saudi Arabia.
The clinic itself is very nice and clean. All the staff have always been very welcoming and friendly.

Doctor: Dr Naif Arab Treatment: General Dentistry

My experience with Dr. Nayef Arab was one of the best I’ve ever had. He started a comprehensive treatment plan for my teeth that lasted about three months, and thank God, we completed it completely, and I saw a huge difference.

I was suffering from dental problems due to previous neglect and mistakes by a previous dentist. He worked on every detail with precision and care, and treated all the damaged teeth with high professionalism. Honestly, he’s a conscientious and dedicated doctor, very honest in his work, and God-fearing. This is reflected in his treatment of me and his commitment to the patient’s well-being above all else. He explains every step and reassures you, and doesn’t make you feel anxious at all.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dr. Nayef. You were amazing, and may God reward you for your hard work and care 🙏🏻. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants a skilled dentist who truly cares about their dental health.

Doctor: Wasmah Tobji Treatment: General Dentistry

My first visit today was to Dr. Wasma. I had a filling done at another clinic, and there were some excess tissues that were bothering me. Dr. Wasma, may God bless her, fixed them and cleaned them properly. She works honestly, gives you what you need, is very respectful, and has a gentle touch. The clinic in general is clean and organized, and everyone is very polite.
